Turneffe Flats, through its sister conservation organization, Turneffe Atoll Trust, played a pivotal role in establishing the Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve in 2012 and later helped found TASA. The resort remains a major financial supporter of the Marine Reserve, with donations funding the Adaptive Management (Science) Program and other vital initiatives.
Craig Hayes, the owner of the resort, highlights the importance of a well-funded and efficiently managed marine reserve for the long-term sustainability of Turneffe Atoll. He emphasizes that nature-based tourism relies on healthy ecosystems. Likewise, the long-term success of tourism depends on strong environmental conservation efforts.
Turneffe Atoll Trust, a US 501(c)(3) organization and Belizean NGO, works closely with TASA in a strong conservation partnership. Together, they support marine conservation, sustainable fisheries, and habitat protection throughout Belize.
The Trust has led efforts to protect bonefish, permit, and tarpon populations. In addition, it helped secure a nationwide ban on marine gillnets and establish the Turneffe Land Trust. As a result, more than 17,000 acres of mangrove habitat at Turneffe Atoll now receive long-term protection.
